Perplexity vs ChatGPT Privacy: Which AI Is Safer for Your Data?
2026-05-21
Perplexity and ChatGPT solve different problems — research with citations vs general-purpose chat — but they expose your data in different ways. Here is what teams need to know before choosing.

Detect and redact sensitive data in your browser before prompts reach ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other AI tools.
Teams often pick Perplexity for fast research with sources, and ChatGPT for drafting, analysis, and integrations. The privacy question is not “which is better overall,” but which risks match your workflow. Both can be appropriate for business use — if you understand what each platform logs, retains, and may use for product improvement.
ChatGPT (OpenAI) stores prompts and responses in provider infrastructure. On free and many consumer plans, conversations may be retained for abuse monitoring and product improvement unless you opt out where available. ChatGPT Team, Enterprise, and API customers typically get stronger commitments: no training on business data by default, admin controls, and retention settings you can govern. For EU teams, OpenAI offers GDPR-oriented documentation and data processing terms on paid business plans — but standard consumer tiers are not a substitute for a workplace policy.
Perplexity is built around search: your question may trigger live web retrieval, source ranking, and citation display. That means two layers of exposure — what you type, and what the system fetches on your behalf. Perplexity’s privacy posture depends on plan: consumer accounts may retain activity to improve the product; Perplexity Pro and enterprise offerings advertise stronger privacy controls, including limits on how data is used for model improvement. Because answers cite third-party pages, you should assume queries can indirectly reveal intent even when you do not paste internal documents.
The biggest practical difference is accidental disclosure. ChatGPT risk often comes from pasting confidential text directly into the chat box — contracts, HR records, customer lists, credentials. Perplexity adds search-behavior risk: a “harmless” question can still leak strategy through query wording (e.g. “latest pricing for [your client] enterprise plan”) or through uploaded files on supported tiers. Neither platform removes your obligation to classify data before it leaves your device.
For GDPR-conscious organizations in the EU, both providers are US-headquartered. Compliance is achievable with the right plan, contracts, and technical controls — not by choosing the “more private” logo. You need: a lawful basis for processing, a data processing agreement where required, documented retention rules, employee training, and pre-send controls so personal data and trade secrets do not enter either tool unprotected.
Privacy comparison at a glance
- Primary use case: ChatGPT — general chat, coding, documents, integrations. Perplexity — web-grounded answers with citations and research workflows.
- Training on your prompts: Business/API tiers on both sides generally avoid using customer content for model training by default; consumer tiers may allow product-improvement use unless you change settings or use a paid privacy-oriented plan. OpenAI — Enterprise privacy
- Unique Perplexity exposure: Search queries and retrieved sources create an additional metadata trail beyond the chat transcript itself. Perplexity Help — data collection
- Unique ChatGPT exposure: Deep workflow integration (plugins, file uploads, memory features on some plans) can increase persistence of context across sessions if not governed. OpenAI — Privacy Policy
- EU teams: Both require DPAs, staff policy, and technical safeguards; neither replaces anonymization before send. OpenAI Trust Portal
Which should your team use?
- Use Perplexity when you need cited research and are careful to avoid client names, unreleased figures, or internal identifiers in queries.
- Use ChatGPT when you need flexible drafting, code, or team integrations — but only on business plans with retention and training controls configured.
- Do not use consumer/free tiers for HR, legal, finance, health, or customer PII on either platform.
- Treat every prompt as a data export: if you would not email it to a vendor, do not send it raw to Perplexity or ChatGPT.
- Install browser-level pre-send protection so PII and secrets are detected before they reach either site.
- Document which tool is approved for which data class (public, internal, confidential, restricted).
The honest answer for security and compliance leads
Perplexity is not automatically safer than ChatGPT, or vice versa. Perplexity’s search model introduces citation and query-logging considerations; ChatGPT’s flexibility increases the chance teams paste full documents into the window. For most incidents we see in the field, the failure mode is the same: sensitive text entered without redaction, on an account tier without enterprise controls. The platform choice matters less than enforcing a consistent pre-send standard across both.
Protect prompts on Perplexity and ChatGPT before you send
AIamigo adds a pre-send layer in your browser: it detects names, emails, IDs, financial and legal patterns, and other sensitive fields, then helps you redact or anonymize before the prompt reaches Perplexity, ChatGPT, or other AI sites. Use the extension for day-to-day protection, and AIamigo for team policies, audit visibility, and PDF or document workflows when data must not leave your control raw.
